Less than 60 miles southwest of Reno - Sparks and 198 miles northeast of San Francisco, Lake Tahoe straddles the California - Nevada line as North America’s largest Alpine lake, some 12 miles wide, 22 miles long and ringed by stunning scenery. Waters are so clear and pure that promos brag over how a white dinner plate can be seen at 78 feet below the surface. California North Shore winter options include world-class terrain at nearly a dozen ski and snowboard resorts or cross-country ski action along more than 200 miles of scenic trails. It’s also possible to go tubing, sledding, snowshoeing and snowmobiling or to build snowmen or romp in the snow at one of Tahoe's snowplay areas. Music, shows, gaming and lakeside dining add recreational dimension. Nevada North Shore’s Lake Tahoe Incline Village / Crystal Bay resort area, 35 miles from Reno - Tahoe International Airport, offers ski action, golf, mountain biking, and casino fun, and is also the lake area closest to Reno. The South Shore’s magnetism provides 24-hour gaming action, cabaret shows, live music, dancing and more. Nightclubs such as Club Nero and Altitude, draw crowds with world-class entertainers. Attractions include gondola rides, paddlewheeler dining and dancing, and hot air ballooning. Tahoe area restaurants range from European-style bistros and steakhouses to ethnic enclaves for Pan-Asian, Mexican, Swiss, Thai favorites, and, of course, California cuisine. Lake Tahoe accommodations range from ski lodges, rental condos, and inns to chain motels and plush casino hotels.

Area Facts: The region is served by two airports. The North Lake area is closest to the Reno - Tahoe International Airport (RNO). Cities on the south side of the lake, on the other hand, are closest to the Lake Tahoe Airport (TVL). In the heart of the Sierra Nevada, the Tahoe area offers 18 unique ski areas.
